g2 - geeks unleashed game

Posted by debbie on 13th August 2008

G2 - Geeks Unleashed is an arcade-style game where you try to collect artifacts before your opponent can, thereby winning prizes. You play a geeky collector at a convention, desperately looking for the article that will complete your collection. In order to get that article, you have to “battle” other geeks in a puzzle/arcade game. There are also some mini games to play.

The game is cute and cartoonish, with some spoofs of convention goers. The gameplay is deceptively easy, and you do need to use some strategy to win at higher levels.  With 30 levels of gameplay, the game is short, but the production values are good, and you can play in various modes, including story, quick, and even 2-player.

A fun, funny spoof on geeks, their obsessions, and the conventions that let them be as crazy as they wanna be. G2 - Geeks Unleashed - download a free 1-hour trial or buy it for only $19.95.

fishdom - match-3 aquarium goodness

Posted by debbie on 4th August 2008

Fishdom match-3 game imageYep, it’s been a while since I’ve posted. Fishdom is a match-3 game that I love to play. It’s soothing, with a bit of everything.

The graphics and sound are amazing. You play a match-3 game to win money. With the money, you can outfit one of 3 aquariums with fish and decorations. You can even feature your creations as wallpaper on your computer. This is a great game that combines gameplay, shopping and eye-candy, all in one.

The only complaint I have is that the game loads somewhat slowly. However, the great graphics and sound are worth it. Download Fishdom today - get a free 1-hour trial today or buy it for $19.95.

chocolatier matching and resource game

Posted by debbie on 14th June 2007

Chocolatier Matching and Resource game imageYummm… chocolate. What could be better than one of my food obsessions?  Combining it with a game obsession, of course. This tasty game combines a mouthwatering premise (you make chocolates) with a dash of resource management and the thrill of global journeys and starting a business.

As the title character, you inherit some recipes from a relative and you’re on your way to starting a chocolate empire. Collect recipes, buy ingredients, sell exclusive chocolates, and purchase factories.

The matching part of the gameplay is pretty easy. Each chocolate requires a certain number and combination of ingredients. You buy these, and then set up your factory to make them. Each time, you have to play a mini-game to see how fast you can make the chocolates.

But the real challenge of the game is balancing what you’re making with what you spend. Expanding is tough. Making sure the factories stay productive, buying low and selling high, and buying the best property were the ingredients that made this game fun for me. Just as in real life, growing a business was hard, but when I succeeded, I was ecstatic.

viking invasion flash game

Posted by debbie on 23rd March 2007

image of monster vikingsThe Monster Viking Invasion game is really an advertisement disguised as a game. There are a lot of those out there. This one is fun because, well, Vikings, especially monster Vikings, are always funny. The cartoon graphics and sound effects are good here, and the gameplay is different. You must spring traps to keep London safe from hordes of Vikings. A short game, but fun nevertheless. Click here.

barnyard invasion funny match puzzle game

Posted by debbie on 18th March 2007

Barnyard Invasion imageBarnyard Invasion is a funny twist on the match puzzle game genre. You play an alien vacationing on Earth. You’re here to sightsee, but you also have a mission: to rescue farm animals from their cruel human masters. In order to save the animals, you need to match 4 of them in a row by sliding the rows and columns around.

The game is timed, and you have to rescue a certain number of each animal per round. There are also obstacles, like barns, hay bales, and animals with foil hats on. However, you have dynamite, and other helpful items.

This game looks really good, and the animals are animated and funny. The cut-scenes are very cute, showing vacation photos, as well as some mix-ups with the transportation system the aliens use. You’ll have lots to do, with 60 levels, eight types of animals to rescue, and 2 difficulty settings.

Barnyard Invasion is a very fun way to get your match-game fix. Click here to download a free 1-hour demo, or buy for $19.99

belle’s beauty boutique is a dashing fun game

Posted by debbie on 9th March 2007

Image of Belle's Beauty Shop gameIn Belle’s Beauty Boutique, you help Belle run her beauty shop. Wash, cut, color and blow-dry hiar, give manicures, and keep your customers happy and their tips coming in. Sounds fun and easy, right? Well, it is fun, but it’s also somewhat challenging.

Although this game can be compared to Diner Dash, there are some cute additions to this game that make it stand out from the other clones. First and foremost is the fact that the game takes place in a beauty shop, which hasn’t been done before. The game graphics look great, with bright colors and really good-looking animation. The sounds also add to the atmosphere — there are little snippets of conversation, radio and tv sounds, all of which combine to make you feel immersed in the beauty world.  There is only one small problem with the game, which is that there were only a few things to change in regards to updating the beauty shop. I would have preferred more variety in color and accessories.

Then there’s the gameplay, which is a little different and adds challenges. Basically, people come in and tell you what they want. You seat them in the right seats, and give them the right nail and hair colors, and they pay and tip you. In Diner Dash, you could chain actions, but in Belle’s Beauty Boutique, the object is to seat customers so that they interact. Some tips I learned:

* First, be careful how you seat the people. I inadvertently slipped some people into the wrong seats and they weren’t happy!

* Second, be careful that you give the customers the color of hair and nails that they request. The coloring mini-game is a spinner with different colored blocks. Click the spinner just right, and the customer loves you. Click it carelessly, and you don’t get a tip! It’s easy to do when it’s quiet, but I found it tough to click just right when I was busy with other clients.

* And finally, seat the women with same-colored shirts next to each other and the put boys in between girls. Also, put the grandmothers and gossips next to and in-between girls. This last point highlights the only sort-of disappointing thing about this game It’s fun and cheery, but it does spread the misconception that all girls like to do is look pretty, flirt, and gossip. Which is sometimes true, but not all the time.

Overall, however, I loved this game. It was immersive and challenging, but also fun and quirky. Click here to download a free 1-hour trial or buy your copy today, and help make the world beautiful, one person at a time.

wild west wendy - old-time action bartending

Posted by debbie on 23rd February 2007

Image of Wild West Wendy arcade and puzzle gameWild West Wendy follows in the tradition of Diner Dash, but this time you’re in the rowdy, rough wild west. Help Wendy tend bar, break up fights, and shoot robbers. It’s an exciting game, and the challenges just keep getting better and better.

In the game, you start off as a bartender serving beers, but you eventually end up running a fancy saloon! There are 45 levels in all. You can play in 3 modes - Story, Campaign, and Timed Attack. You can also choose to play 3 different levels - Easy, Medium and Hard. One of the best twists is that you can choose to play 3-minute or 10-minute rounds - change them depending on how much time you have.

There’s a lot going on in the story mode of this game. Wendy has to return lost cows, find out if the the town’s undertaker is a vampire, and discover whether another guy is a ghost. All of this while fighting against an evil competitor saloon owner who’s part of Wendy’s traumatic past.

One of the funniest parts of the game is that between rounds, you get to read the Mystery Epitaph, a truly funny newspaper that blends commentary on yesteryear (”Sending Morse Signals”, for instance) with commentary on today (the townsfolk complain that the kids are SMSing way too much). Very clever!

Besides the gameplay, the other elements of this game are great. The images are fun (and funny) and the cut-scene cartoons are top-notch. The music is pretty good - I didn’t get annoyed with it like I have in other games.

Mystery Studio Games (the makers of Wild West Wendy) have done a great job of adding touches to improve the “serve the customers” game. Click here to play a free hour-long trial or download the game for only $19.95.

plasma pong - a classic arcade game goes fluid

Posted by debbie on 30th January 2007

Image of Plasma Pong arcade gamePlasma Pong updates the classic game and makes it both cool to play and groovy to watch. Best of all, it’s free to download. At the core, Plasma Pong is the same old game of pong. You use your mouse to control the paddle, and try to get the ball past your opponent. Simple, right?

Well, Steve Taylor has added a very cool feature that adds eye candy to the game: fluid dynamics. In the game, using the right, left and middle buttons on your mouse, you can inject plasma fluid into the environment, create a vacuum from your paddle, and blast shockwaves into the playing area. All these abilities have fluid-based kinetic effects on the ball, making Plasma Pong a fast-paced and exciting game. Adding to the atmosphere is a soundtrack that ratchets up the tenson.

If you get tired of manipulating the paddle, there’s also a cool sandbox area. Here, you can play around with fluid effects and create some great masterpieces. However, you can’t save the pictures you make, unless you take a screenshot of them.

Overall, this is an update that takes an old game and makes it something else entirely, and it makes for a fun gaming experience.
